Community Paediatric Child Development Clinics

Child development clinics are held in the Gem centre by Community Paediatricians. It's for Children from 0-5 years where there are concerns about their development are seen in this clinic. 

What happens at the appointment? 

Your child will be seen by a doctor. The doctor takes a detailed development history and examines your child. The doctor, if required will arrange for blood/ urine tests and make appropriate referrals to other services. Follow up arrangements will be made as deemed appropriate.

How to access the service

They accept referrals from health visitors, GPs, Special Needs Early Years and Therapy Services.

Community paediatricians

Community paediatricians support children from 0-18 who are resident in Wolverhampton. They are consultants, speciality doctors and trainee paediatric doctors working in Community Child Health who have broad skills covering paediatrics and child health with specialist skills in the care of vulnerable families, children with long-term conditions and child public health. 

They see children:

  • With developmental disorders and disabilities
  • With complex health needs (including end of life care)
  • Who have special educational needs
  • And contribute to the assessment and management of neurodevelopmental disorders like Autism and ADHD 
  • In whom there are safeguarding concerns
  • Who are in care or are in the process of being adopted.

Community Paediatricians see children with complex needs outside acute hospitals – in schools, in outreach clinics in locations closer to home. 

They provide assessment, diagnosis, management and long term oversight of children with complex health needs, with an emphasis on prevention, continuity of care and multi-agency working with education and social care.

How to access the service 

Referrals are made from:

  • Health professionals – Including health visitors and school nurses for concerns with the child’s development
  • GPs from Wolverhampton Integrated Care Board (ICB) area 
  • As part of the child development service 
  • Education services for concerns related to autism and ADHD 
  • Children’s social care services and Police for safeguarding concerns 
  • Local authority for statutory health assessment for children with special education needs 
  • Local authority for children in care requiring statutory health assessment
