Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) must be reviewed each year to check the child or young person’s needs are being met.

Reviews should be carried out using person-centred planning principles and must focus on the child or young person's progress towards achieving the outcomes recorded in the EHCP.

The main purpose of the annual review process is to:

  • ensure the views, wishes and feelings of the child, young person and their family are at the centre of the annual review process. Ensuring full participation in decision making which is called a person-centred process.
  • monitor the child or young person's progress towards their outcomes and longer-term aspirations.
  • consider whether these outcomes and supporting targets remain appropriate or if new targets or outcomes are required for the year ahead.
  • look at the appropriateness of the EHCP against any progress during the previous year
  • consider any changes in circumstances and whether there should be a change in provision, placement or if the EHCP is still required

Wolverhampton Information, Advice and Support Service offers information, advice and support to help families navigate the annual review process. This may include support to understand information, to feel confident to express views and to fully participate in all aspects of the process and decision making.
